Iris Louise Cochran Phelps, 93, of Midwest City passed away on February 5, 2023. She was born on March 12, 1929, in Pittsburgh, KS to Ira and Flora Cochran. She married Chester L. Phelps on January 15, 1946 in Erie, KS. Together, they had six children; Chester Wayne, Donald Thomas, Sandra Louise, Keith Steven, Traci Jo, and Kris Leigh. Chet and Iris were a career military couple and lived in many places including England, Alaska, Hawaii, Georgia, Mississippi, and Arkansas before finally settling in Midwest City, Oklahoma where they retired. She was a long-time member of First Southern Baptist Church and she enjoyed singing in the choir for many years; she especially loved being in the annual Christmas Program. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Iris drove a school bus for many years for the Mid-Del Public Schools. She and Chet loved being at Lake Eufaula and spent many years camping, boating, fishing, and socializing with the family and lake friends. She was an avid garage sale shopper and loved nothing more than finding a good bargain.
She is survived by one son, Keith Phelps and wife Michelle of Choctaw, and one daughter, Kris Wheat of Moore, along with 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Chester, sons Wayne and Don, daughters Sandy and Traci, and granddaughter Kari. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Homestead Assisted Living Center and Tender Care Hospice for the loving care and support they provided to Iris.
