James Leon Thurmond, 84, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2025, just one day after celebrating 61 beautiful years of marriage with the love of his life, Connie Ann Thurmond.
Born on March 18, 1941, in Cleveland, Georgia, James was one of six siblings and grew up surrounded by family, hard work, and humor—something that remained with him throughout his life. Though he left high school in the 10th grade, Leon had a sharp wit and strong work ethic that served him well in all he did.
At the young age of 17, James proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served two honorable tours. His time in the military was a defining chapter of his life—instilling in him a deep sense of duty and pride.
James was known for his incredible work ethic and his deep devotion to his family. He loved his black Cadillac and his 7-pound partner in crime, Tilly. He was quite a storyteller with a grin that could light up a room. One of his favorite tales involved the missing part of his finger—a result of an accident, though he swore for years that a booger bit it off. He had a gift for making people laugh and a heart big enough to hold generations. His presence will be missed in the daily mundane moments and most definitely during family get-togethers and holidays when he would lead his family in prayer.
James is preceded in death by his parents; James Carlton Thurmond & Dorothy Mae Thurmond, Siblings; Lawrence Thurmond, Lillian Shelnut, and Joel Thurmond.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years Connie Thurmond,
Siblings; Ellon & Gilbert Forrester and Dan & Babo Thurmond;
His children: Carl & Patti Thurmond, Steve & Angie Thurmond, Brian & Debbie Thurmond and Kimberly Thurmond;
His grandchildren: Brandon Pursell, David James Thurmond, Hailey Emerson, Hunter Brewer, Rowdy Thurmond, and Timberlyn Thurmond;
6 great-grandchildren: Emalee Pursell, Brantlee Pursell, Steven Emerson, Rhett Thurmond, Landon Emerson and Sadie Thurmond.
He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins he loved greatly.
Jame’s life was one filled with love, laughter, and loyalty. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, service, and an unshakable commitment to his family. James, and ‘Papa J’ to many will be missed, fondly remembered and he will be forever cherished in the hearts of all that knew him and loved him deeply.
A celebration of Leon’s life will be held on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at Grace Place Baptist Church, 9300 S. Anderson Rd, Oklahoma City, OK 73165.
