Lloyd Allen Powell of Midwest City passed away July 26th at the age of 91. Born in Valliant, Oklahoma in 1930 to Jewel and Horace Powell, Lloyd was the oldest of twelve children. He worked hard from a very young age, picking cotton with his family as a child and then joining the Army at 17. He served with distinction, and was highly decorated in Vietnam. After his retirement in 1968 he pursued a second career with the US Postal Service.
In 1957, Lloyd met and married Eva Picard in Oklahoma City. They went on to have three daughters and two sons. In 1981, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Central State University. Lloyd was 51, the first college graduate in his family. In his free time he enjoyed Oklahoma history and Civil War history. He liked to garden and loved to gather sand plums or pecans when he came upon them on his walks.
Lloyd is preceded in death by Eva, his wife of 61 years, and survived by their children: Teresa Swarb and her husband Robert, of Choctaw, OK; Dawn Wright and her husband Bill, of Bowling Green, KY; Allen Powell and his wife Laurie, of McKinney, TX; Colice Powell and his wife Terri, of Moore, OK; Erin Brown and her husband Gerald, of Mustang, OK. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
