She worked numerous jobs beginning as a teenager working in her fathers convenient stores/gas stations. She worked as a Soda-Jerk to make money to buy her school clothes; she went with her family to California where they picked cotton & fruit. They quickly got tired of doing that and moved back to Oklahoma. She went to Montgomery, Alabama two months out of High School to marry Sammie Smothers who was stationed there. They were married June 6, 1951. In Montgomery, Alabama she worked in sales for a Jeweler and was Supervisor of two employees. She later worked as a Secretary for the State of Alabama.
