Margaret Workman of Del City, died Friday, April 20, 2012 She was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas May 8, 1934 to Harry W. and Oma Ireland, who preceded her in death along with an older brother, James Wesley Ireland. Margaret married Eugene Workman July 18, 1952 and they moved to Tulsa that year so Gene could attend the University of Tulsa on the GI Bill. They would have been married 60 years in July. Margaret and Gene had two children while living in Tulsa, Deborah “Kay” and David Wesley. The Workman family moved to Del City in 1960 where they raised their children through college. Margaret loved her children, grandchildren, and everyone else’s children more than life itself. Margaret and Gene were the Mom and Dad Advisors for the MYF youth group at Aldersgate Methodist Church for several years. They were involved in the Del City Band Parents, Concerts, Piano Recitals, and all sports, especially Track, Cross-Country, and other school activities. Margaret helped organize bowling leagues for Sunnylane Bowling Alley and became an avid bowler. She also enjoyed teaching and playing Canasta with her family and friends. Margaret worked for Dehart Roofing and sheet metal for 23 years as Office Manager and Bookkeeper plus owning and operating a used merchandise store called MAW/S RELICS & BOOKS. After both children were in college, Margaret became interested in politics and the Republican Party. She was unsuccessful in running for State Representative. However, she stayed interested in local and state politics and felt she had made a difference in many issues. Margaret was appointed to the Del City Housing Authority to help establish better rules, regulations and conditions for low-income-housing. Due to Margaret’s efforts many good changes were made throughout the state. In 1996, Margaret was elected Mayor of Del City. However, she lost interest in politics when her son, David had a son and she went back to her real love – children and young people. She calls them her “Deer Creek Kids”.
Margaret is survived by her husband, Gene of 59 years, her daughter Deborah Kay Johnson and her Husband Phil, Grandson Kyle and wife Denae, Grandson Scott, all living in Kansas; Margaret is also survived by her son; David, his wife Lisa and their son Lane and a daughter, Emily and her husband, Thomas McGraw of Oklahoma City.
