Maria Juliana Marguth, 85, passed away on June 19, 2016 at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City, OK. Maria was born on August 11, 1930 in Aschaffenburg, Germany to George and Alberta (Schork) Welzbacher.
Maria grew up in Aschaffenburg, Germany during WWII. After the war she completed a 3 year apprenticeship and graduated from business school. Maria left Germany around 1949 to work as a nanny in England. She saw this as an opportunity to learn English so she could return to Germany and get a “good paying” job at the American Army base in her hometown. After returning to Germany, Maria worked at the snack bar, Stars & Stripes Bookstand and Quartermaster’s office on the American Army base in Aschaffenburg. It was while she was working on the base that she met the Dempseys, a young American Army couple who later sponsored her to come to America. The Dempseys were stationed at Anchorage, Alaska when they sponsored Maria. The American portion of her life journey began there. She met two people in Alaska who would have a tremendous impact on her life; her dear friend Lois Young and the love of her life, Wayne Marguth.
When she married Wayne in 1968, Maria and her daughter: Julie, were delighted to grow their family even more as Wayne’s children: Becky and Tony, were adored and accepted into the newly formed Marguth family Maria loved her family and was fiercely protective of them until she took her last breath. The first 10 years of their life together was filled with much travel as Wayne was assigned to bases all over the world. They lived in South Carolina, Oregon (while Wayne served in Vietnam), England, Italy and Oklahoma. While in Oklahoma, Maria and some other German ladies became close friends. They relished getting together for cake, coffee, and sprechen auf Deutsch (speak in German) to each other. This crazy bunch of German ladies and their husbands held a special place in Maria’s heart.
Maria was preceded in death by her parents, George and Alberta Welzbacher, her sister, Edeltraud Welzbacher and her brother Norbert Welzbacher.
Maria is survived by her husband of 48 years, Wayne; her children Becky (Terry) Avery, Julie (Joe) Costello, and Tony (Linda) Marguth; her grandchildren Ryan (Sally) Avery, Todd (Wendy) Avery, Taylor (Annie) Marguth, Audrey (Collin) Olcott, Mallory Marguth and Anna Costello; and, her great-grandchildren Eliza, Sam, Claire, Aubree, Jillian, Dane, Zaydon, Ozzee, Finnley and Emery.
A memorial service will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 22, 2016 at Bill Eisenhour Southeast Chapel, 5005 SE 29th St., Del City, OK 73115 with Pastor Joe Wingfield officiating.
