We are thankful for the medical community that helped afford us the past several years to express our love for each other.
Tom was born on September 2, 1949, in Wynnewood, Oklahoma, to Milton and Mary E. Haslam. The youngest of eight, he was raised on a beautiful farm in Pernell, Oklahoma, and moved to Del City with his mother at the age of 16. He graduated from Del City High School in 1968 where he learned that his passion for fast, classic cars could become a career.
While still in high school, he met the love of his life, Mary Smallwood, at the Del City Church of Christ where he attended for over 56 years and served as a Deacon for more than 30 years.
Tom and Mary were married in 1970 and were blessed with two children, Jason and Jennifer, which he would consider his greatest accomplishment in life. He was lovingly known as Grandpa Tom and Papa to his four beautiful grandchildren who were his pride and joy. He enjoyed camping and loved the annual family reunion at Lake Tenkiller with his many family members. Together the Haslam and Ginn families enjoyed many years of fun adventures and he considered Larry, Judy, Jeremy and Larra as family too.
Tom was a lifelong learner, inventor, creator, problem-solver and servant of his God, his family and his church. For almost 40 years he, with Larry Ginn, owned and operated G&H Paint and Body Shop in Del City where he pursued his passion for cars and later incorporated a sign shop and screen printing service. He was widely known for his ingenuity with technology and anything mechanical. He and Larry even built their family homes together. As his disease progressed, he still found ways to do the things he enjoyed by modifying his equipment so that he could continue to work outdoors on his tractor or in his favorite place, the barn. He was a kind and compassionate person who frequently went out of his way to help others. He loved riding motorcycles, had a beautiful singing voice, could play the trumpet and could drive almost anything. He leaves us with a legacy of love, courage and resilience.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Milton Stewart Haslam and Mary Elizabeth Haslam, his older brothers Jack Haslam, Charles Haslam and his wife Joan, his sister Ruth and her husband Gilbert French, his brother Raymond Haslam and his wife Barbara, four nieces and nephews and his lifelong best friend, Larry Ginn.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary (Smallwood) Haslam of Oklahoma City, son Jason Haslam and his wife Devona of Sapulpa, OK, daughter Jennifer Wolf and her husband Daniel Wolf of Mustang, OK and grandchildren, Aiden Stewart Haslam, Henry Lee Haslam, Holly Suzanne Haslam and Ellie Addison Wolf. He is also survived by his brothers and their wives, Bob and Kay Haslam of Norman, OK, Don and Susan Haslam of Chickasha, OK, and Joe Haslam of Shawnee, OK and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews, Gary Henthorn, trusted friend and co-worker, many friends and beloved church family.
We would like to thank the numerous physicians and staff with OU Medical and Stephenson Cancer Center for treating him like family for over the past 20 years.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 18 at the Del City Church of Christ, 1901 Vickie Dr., Del City, OK 73115 with Jeff Gardner officiating. Burial will follow at Sunnylane Cemetery in Del City. Funeral services are under the care of the Bill Eisenhour Funeral Home.
