Yvonne Marie Holmes Shannon, 85, of Midwest City, OK, passed peacefully into the arms of God, surrounded by many loved ones, on Wednesday, August 17, 2022. Yvonne was born in Pencil Bluff, AR, to Clyde W. and Myrtle Singleton Holmes.
Yvonne came to Oklahoma City, OK, about a year after graduation from Oden (AR) High School in 1953 to attend Draughon’s Business School. She also worked at the Pig Stand BBQ drive-in located at 33rd and South Robinson and met her husband-to-be, Elmer, during this time. Elmer and Yvonne’s first date was to the 1954 State Fair of Oklahoma. They dated regularly after that and married in Midwest City, OK, on October 19, 1955. Yvonne worked at the Credit Bureau in Oklahoma City, starting around June 1955. She worked there until April 1, 1964. After Joni and Ed, her daughter and son, were in school full-time, she started back to work in a jeans factory, and then joined Civil Service at the Federal Aviation Administration in Oklahoma City in October 1974. In August 1979, she transferred to Civil Service at Tinker AFB, OK, and worked there until her retirement in January 1995.
Yvonne and Elmer kept busy with their involvement in the hobbies and activities of their four children. After both Yvonne and Elmer retired, they enjoyed traveling in their RV—most often to Mission, TX, for the winter months. Yvonne liked to spend time with Elmer, provide care for her pets, read, work puzzles, and play mystery and other games on the computer. Yvonne was a caregiver and listening ear to many, many children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and pets. She was one of those exceptional mothers—who had an intuitive side to her. Her children always wondered how she knew they were up to something. She was complimented for being such a devoted and caring mother many times.
Yvonne is survived by her daughter, Diana Heath and husband, Jim, of Midwest City, OK; daughter Rhonda Snow and husband, Donny, of Moore, OK; son, Ed Shannon and wife, Amy, of San Antonio, TX; and daughter Joni Dallas of Midwest City, OK.
