DELCAMBRE – A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted for Mr. Palmer R. Barras, age 86, at 10:30 am Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church with Fr. Ed Degeyter officiating. Interment will be held at Our Lady of the Lake Mausoleum with military honors by Vermilion Honor Guard.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 am until 10:00 pm on Wednesday with a Rosary at 7:00 pm. The funeral home will reopen at 8:00 am on Thursday until service time.
A native of Erath and resident of Delcambre, Mr. Barras passed away at 10:30 pm on Monday, April 22, 2013 at his residence.
Mr. Barras served his country honorably in the US Army during WWII. He served as President of the Delcambre Shrimper’s Association and was a member of the Louisiana Port Commission. He reigned as Shrimp King Crustacean XXI in 1974 and was also a member of the American legion Post 338.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Flo Migues Barras of Delcambre; three sons, Ronnie Barras and wife Gwen and Kenny Barras and wife LiliDell all of Delcambre; Chris Barras of Lafayette and one daughter, Paula B. Vinet and husband Toby of Delcambre; daughter in law, Pam LeBlanc Barras; thirteen grandchildren Tony Barras, Brady Barras, Lanie Guillory, Jolyn Barras, Ken Barras, Jodie Scott, Krissy Duhon, Buster Barras, Hallie Rivera, Kristin Barras, Michelle Barras, Lacey Desormeaux and Brai Vinet; fifteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; two brothers, Samuel Barras of Delcambre and Harold Barras and wife Eunice of Abbeville and one sister, Thelma “Bing” Broussard of Erath.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Simon and Thelma Schexnayder Barras; one son, Joey James Barras and one sister, Linda B. Boudreaux.
Pallbearers will be Ronnie Barras, Kenny Barras, Chris Barras, Toby Vinet, Tony Barras and Ken Barras.
Memorial donations may be made in his name to Hospice Compassus, 1438 South College, Lafayette, LA 70503.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Mr. Barras’ granddaughter, Lacie Desormeaux for her care, support and compassion during this difficult time.
