Doris grew up on Cook Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York, before moving with her family to Bedford Avenue in Sheepshead Bay and graduating from James Madison High School. She married Hyman Bernfeld in 1956 and they were married until his death 57 years later. They lived most of their lives in Brooklyn where she was active in Cancer Care and her children’s public schools and where she and Hy enjoyed Broadway theater and dining with friends. Doris supported her family as bookkeeper, comptroller and chief cook and bottlewasher at the Pan American Motor Inn in Queens, New York. Upon Doris’s retirement, she and Hy moved to the Cascades in Boynton Beach where she was active in Hadassah and made many new friends. Doris was proud to become an adult bat mitzvah and to be an active member of her Boynton Beach synagogue and to be “The Bub” to her grandchildren and many other members of her extensive circle. She participated in many volunteer activities such as knitting for seriously ill children and staffing the gift shop at Bethesda Hospital.
Doris is survived by her two children, Jeffrey and Randye, daughter-in-law Mary-Kathleen O’Connell and grandchildren Daniel Hilleman, Jeremy Bernfeld and Kelsey Borner. She was preceded in death by her husband Hyman, her grandson Bryan Bernfeld, her sister May (Tash) Weiss and her brother Carl Tash.
Funeral services will be at Riverside Chapel in Delray Beach, Florida with internment at Eternal Light Cemetery in Boynton Beach.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to PMC.org/Bryan’s Bikers, Hadassah or Cancer Care.
