On November 6, 2022, Elaine Gertrude Slotnick (nee Barron), born in 1932, passed away peacefully in her home, in Delray Beach, Florida. She was 90. Elaine was the loving mother of two children, Robin Krasner and Jeffrey Krasner and grandmother to Skyler Budoff, Adam Budoff, Jonathan Krasner and Jaime Krasner.
Elaine always had a flair and a love for fashion and style. She was a stunning woman, always beautifully dressed and made up for every occasion. Elaine’s brother, Richard Barron, was a photographer and took many pictures of his gorgeous sister. An intelligent woman, Elaine would have liked to have gone to college. Instead, like many women of the post-World War 2 generation, she married young, at age 19, to an army veteran. They moved from Brooklyn, N.Y. to Rockaway Beach in Queens, N.Y. to raise their children. In 1968 after 18 years of marriage Elaine took the unusual step for the time and got a divorce. Later that year, Elaine met and was married to Gerald Slotnick, an interior designer, until his passing in 2015. Together, they enjoyed art, travel, cooking and entertaining friends and family.
In the early 1970s, the fiercely independent and resourceful Elaine, decided to put her love and knowledge of fashion to use. In a time when women stayed at home, Elaine decided to go into business. She asked her mother to become her business partner, and they opened two successful mini boutiques within hair salons in Belle Harbor and Brooklyn. Elaine would purchase the latest in women’s apparel, handbags, jewelry and accessories. Her expert fashion advice was a much anticipated and hot topic in the neighborhood! In addition to fashion, Elaine also loved music, especially opera and classical pieces. As a young woman, she dreamed of becoming an opera singer. Not having realized that dream didn’t stop Elaine from singing! She loved to sing songs from Phantom of the Opera, My Fair Lady and other shows and did so with great vibrato.
Elaine had a knack for cooking. She put her creativity to use in the kitchen and beautifully prepared many holiday dinners and dinner parties. Among her favorite dishes was Cornish game hen with Apricot mousse, and a holiday brisket, both of which she created and presented with her usual flair.
In 1988, Elaine was diagnosed with Lymphoma. Determined to fight it, she endured chemotherapy and other treatments, and eventually was found to be cancer-free. However, she developed ailments resulting from the disease which she endured for the rest of her life. In 1995 she and her husband moved from New York to Florida, where Elaine resided for the remainder of her life.
Elaine Slotnick was a warm and caring mother, and a lively, vivacious and talented woman. She had a vast network of close friends. They looked out her for and they took care of each other to the end. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Her remains will be buried in New Montefiore Cemetery in West Babylon, N.Y.
