I work with Simon & Schuster, my first tour of duty was 1988-2003 and my second was from 1998-current. When I was hired back in 1998, I was part of the Mid-Atlantic sales team headed up by George Keating and mentored by Jerry. Jerry was always one to take reps under their wing. He also "trained" more than a few bosses while with the company. He sold to accounts such as Walden, Brentano's, Barnes & Noble, Mendham Bookshop and of course Bookazine. When Jerry announced his retirement in 2006, it was my honor to take over the Bookazine account and attempt to fill his shoes. Jerry taught me how to sell the account and I still use all of his tips and tricks to this day.
Here is a recap of some the the authors Jerry sold (but didn't read) over his career: Frank McCourt, David McCullough, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Bob Woodward, Jimmy Carter, Ernest Hemmingway, Joseph Heller and Mary Higgins Clark. Books that Jerry had the foresight to obtain lots of orders for included The Great Gatsby, Lonesome Dove, Band of Brothers, Schindler's List, Jonathan Livingston Seagull and the book which perfectly captures Jerry--How To Win Friends and Influence People. Because whether it be at an account, a sales conference, a trade show or one of the many lunches he took customers out for, Jerry was legendary in his sales acumen and his caring. Through honesty and integrity he gained trust and through trust he gained sales and lots of friends. For all of us at S&S--we love you and we miss you Jerry. Tim Hepp
