For most of his life, Philip’s life was filled with laughter and an unwavering commitment to his family His was a soul that touched the lives of everyone that encountered him. From his impish smile to his compassionate nature , he radiated enthusiasm and positivity.
As a dedicated husband, most of his life he was a pillar of strength and unwavering support His wife and children, near and far , were cherished beyond measure. More than they were even aware. And that includes his beloved fur-baby Angie. She has lost two pounds because we don’t spoil her with treats the way he did! Yes he loved to be the “spoiler”. Eileen remembers the time he told her to “Stop making Calli eat her vegetables! There won’t be any room for dessert!” Oy!
His love for adventure and exploration was fostered by his first real job at KLM Airlines where he took advantage of any flight perks that were available to him. A few years later he fostered countless memorable family vacations creating lifelong memories that will be treasured forever
Phil was a true renaissance man, gifted with theatric talent which he expressed performing varied works from Neil Simon to Shakespeare. The New York Times once said that he played a role that Walter Matthau had played -better than Walter Matthau! From stage to screen he’s had leading roles and small parts in everything from theater and film to commercials. Martin Scorsese almost cast him in Goodfellas but went with a known name. Pout. He was even in a Super Bowl commercial with Michael Jordan!
He had a remarkable ability to mimic the great crooners like Sinatra , Nat King Cole and Johnny Mathis. You would swear their voices were coming out of his mouth He could do any accent from anywhere in the world but didn’t know how to speak one foreign language!
In addition to acting, Phil was a talented painter. An avid tennis player and an accomplished raconteur. He delighted friends and family with his sense of humor and loved to share funny stories from his past with vivid animation and a goofy smile.
Furthermore Phil possessed a unique gift for listening He made others feel valued and heard , genuinely interested in their experience and perspective
And oh how he made us laugh! His sense of humor was infectious. Sometimes his humor was completely unintentional but the resulting laughter filled the room just the same.
He wasn’t all fun and laughter though. As a Captain of Internal Affairs for the NYPD, he ascended to Captain in record time in charge of over 1800 policemen in all the boroughs including Manhattan
Later on in his “retirement” Phil really wanted to go to medical school to become a surgeon. But Calli was born and he knew it would be long hours.
So instead he went back to school for Radiologic Technology and graduated as Valedictorian of his program
Phil was impossible and lovable all at the same time But few could resist his charm. The world lost a gift when we lost him.
