On October 9, 2021, Sheldon Spiegelman passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones, two days shy of his 88th birthday.
Shelly was born in Brooklyn, NY on October 11, 1933. He lived on St. John’s Place with his parents, Louis and Ruth Spiegelman and his siblings Willy, Jack and Sandy. He joined the Boy Scouts of America, ultimately becoming an Eagle Scout and recognized as a member of the Order of the Arrow. His involvement continued throughout his lifetime, attending yearly Ten Mile River reunions.
Shelly served in the United States Army, stationed in Japan, just after the end of the Korean War. Upon his return, he used the GI Bill to earn his bachelor and master’s degrees at Brooklyn College. Shelly went into the teaching profession and became the Assistant Principal at Boys & Girls High School in Brooklyn, NY. He was also the Commissioner of Swimming and Tennis for the Public School Athletic League (PSAL).
In addition to his academic career, he spent 45 years working at prestigious sleepaway camps, coaching, teaching, and administering sports. He was the embodiment of the camping experience.
Shelly loved sports, both living them as well as teaching them. He was the captain of the Tilden High School swim team, Brooklyn College swim team and swam competitively with the United States Occupation Forces swim team in Southeast Asia.
Shelly played the trumpet all his life, and culminating his musical career, he was a member in the Symphonic Band of the Palm Beaches for 30 years. He was an avid birder, and would always be on the lookout as he travelled the world, in his retirement.
Shelly was truly a special man, touching so many peoples’ lives, leaving an indelible mark on all of us. Our love of Shelly is rivaled only by his love of life and we take this time to celebrate this exceptional man, whose heart was as big as his appetite. We take great comfort in knowing that he is in good company, surrounded by friends and family who departed before him.
He is survived by his wife, Sonnie, daughters Robin and Melissa, son-in law Gary, grandsons Spencer and Marcus, his brother Jack, sister Sandy and brother-in-law Jerry.
