Solomon (“Sol”) Holland Ellman passed away peacefully at home in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, on October 31, 2025, one day after celebrating his 106th birthday.
Sol was married for 81 years to the love of his life, Una Ellman (Nee Goldstein), who passed away 3 years ago. Sol and Una shared a deep and enduring partnership filled with laughter, devotion, and family. Their story began in a college dance class at the University of Illinois. and blossomed into a lifetime of shared passions—travel, bridge, and above all, dancing.
Born on October 30, 1919, in Chicago, Illinois, to Arthur and Lena Ellman, Sol was a proud graduate of the University of Illinois and earned a master’s degree from Columbia University. He served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in China—an experience that remained a defining part of his life.
After a brief period at Bell Labs upon returning from military service, Sol devoted his professional career to education within the New York City public school system. He began as a high school English teacher and rose to become a respected junior high school principal, selected to serve on the Board of Education’s Board of Examiners. Sol retired in 1983 and in 1993, Sol and Una relocated from New York City to Florida, where they built a vibrant new chapter together.
Sol is survived by his three sons: Eliyahu and his wife Orah of Brooklyn, NY; Jonathan and his wife Beth-Anne of Wayland, MA; and Matthew of Charleston, SC. He was the beloved grandfather of Sarah, Tamar, Danya, Avi, and Josh, and the proud great-grandfather of fourteen.
A man of wide-ranging interests and unwavering curiosity, Sol cherished poetry and could recite countless verses from memory. A standout athlete in his youth, he continued to play tennis and golf well into his 90s. He will be remembered for his warmth, humor, and storytelling—especially the autobiographical tales that delighted his grandchildren and filled the room with laughter.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, November 3, 2025, at IJ Morris Star of David Cemetery in Palm Beach Gardens at 2:30 PM.
