Joe Cox Burtis Sr.

A time of family visitation will be held Wednesday, August 19, 2015 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Bratcher Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, August 20, 2015 at Bratcher Funeral Home Chapel with Dennis Lemon officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Denison.

Joe was born February 19, 1935 son of Pleasant Word “Boots” and Mildred Cox Burtis. He graduated from Denison High School in 1953 and spent most of his life in the construction and roofing business. He was owner of Joe Burtis Construction Company developing Royal Ridge and Brookhaven Estates in Denison. Joe was a 30 year friend of Bill W. and very active in the recovery community and instrumental in founding the Surrender House in Denison. He and Terry resided in the family home at 1015 W. Walker in Denison. Joe enjoyed raising cattle and fishing throughout the years.

Joe is survived by his wife Terry of Denison; daughters D’Ann (Larry) Ellis of Pottsboro, Dana (Kevin) Farley of Denison, their mother Jeanne Burtis of Denison, Kelly Gobel of Sherman; brother John Austin Burtis and wife Pam of Irving; grandchildren, Emilee and Jarrod Maddox, Larry Ellis Jr., Cole and Lisa Gatlin, Canaan Farley, Chris and Jessica Gatlin, Candace and Jeremy Trotter, Nicole Garza, Kristen Burtis, and Katie Joe Burtis. He was blessed and loved with thirteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his father and mother; brother Pleasant Word Burtis, and son Joe Cox Burtis, Jr.

Pallbearers will be Austin Burtis, Larry Ellis Sr., Kevin Farley, Cole Gatlin, Chris Gatlin, Larry Ellis, Jr., and Canaan Farley.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Surrender House, c/o American Bank in Denison, Texas.
