Johnny (“Joni”) Scott of Denison went to Heaven on Christmas morning after a wonderful and long life. She died in her daughter’s loving embrace at the daughter’s home where Johnny had lived for the past eight months. Johnny was born in Grayson County and was the last of five children of Smith and Maggie Nicholson. After a whirlwind two-month courtship, Johnny married the love of her life, Harry V. Scott, Jr., on December 7, 1946 and they had a 57 ½ year love affair until his death on Memorial Day 2004. They both were dedicated to helping several widows over the years, including taking them to lunch every day. Johnny was a faithful member of Waples United Methodist Church having joined in 1948. She and Harry were both Waples MYF (Methodist Youth Fellowship) parent sponsors for six years when their daughter was in junior and senior high. She was a member of United Methodist Women and the Order of the Eastern Star. Johnny was dubbed the “room mother” to her daughter’s Sunday school class at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Plano and its members all loved her dearly.
Johnny was a fabulous homemaker and cook (there will never be a chocolate cake or pie as good as hers). She was dedicated to and loved with all her heart her only child, daughter Sharon Kay Scott, of McKinney, TX.
Johnny and Harry loved to travel, especially their many road trips to the “high country” of Colorado, Wyoming and western Canada. They also enjoyed many vacations to Hawaii, St. Martin, Grand Cayman, the Bahamas, Bermuda and all over Europe. After her husband’s death, she and Sharon took many cruises including to the Hawaiian Islands, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Panama and a trans-Atlantic crossing. People were always attracted to her big brown eyes and sweet smile and, if Sharon left her briefly on ship, she would return to always find her mother surrounded by an adoring group—often passengers who couldn’t even speak English! Her British friends always called her “mum.” Sharon noted that her mother loved music and would only go to bed on these cruises after the last band had quit playing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Bernice John, Verna Nell Harris and Virginia Henderson, and brother Robert S. Nicholson, Jr. She is much loved by her niece Jane Culbertson and husband Don of Stone Mountain, Georgia. Johnny also adored her “grand” dogs, cocker spaniels, who always surrounded her with devotion: Sasha, Gabe, Colt and Rhett.
A private graveside service was held at Cedarlawn Memorial Park conducted by Methodist minister Ray Jordan, a personal friend.
If you wish to make a donation in her memory, she requested gifts be sent to Operation Kindness, a no-kill animal shelter, at 3201 Earhart Dr., Carrollton, TX 75006 or online at www.operationkindness.org.
