Amare Abebe Shenkut

We are gathering not only to mourn the passing of Dr. Amare Abebe Shenkut, but also to honor the remarkable life he lived. We are here to remember him as a faithful husband, a loving father and grandfather, a respected scholar and researcher, a dedicated public servant, and, above all, a kind, humble, and compassionate man.

Dr. Amare was born on September 16, 1948, in the town of Bekoji, Arsi Province, Ethiopia. After completing his primary and secondary education and teacher training, he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Alemaya Agricultural College. He later traveled to the United States, where he earned a Ph.D. in Agricultural Education and Research, as well as a second master's degree in Information Technology from Colorado State University.

Throughout his professional life, Dr. Amare served with dedication, integrity, and excellence. He began his career as a teacher in Wellega Province and later worked for the Development Bank of Ethiopia. He then joined the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR), where he made significant contributions to Ethiopia's agricultural development. As a researcher, he played a major role in the development and release of two haricot bean varieties: Roba, developed for local consumption, and Awash, developed primarily for export. In addition, he was credited for coordinating and strengthening the Pulse Crop Research Team across several research centers of EIAR. Through his active involvement in the Eastern Africa Bean Research Network, he contributed valuable research support for Ethiopia's bean improvement programs. Later here in the United States, he served as an Agricultural Specialist Officer with Customs and Border Protection for 16 years.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Amare was, above all, a devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather. Together with his beloved wife, Zewditu Lemma, he shared 48 years of unwavering love, faith, and mutual respect. Their marriage was blessed with one daughter and two cherished grandchildren, who brought him great joy.

All who knew Dr. Amare can testify, he was an honest, hardworking, humble, compassionate, and wise counselor. He encouraged young people to pursue their education, work diligently, and become responsible citizens. Through his guidance and example, he left a lasting mark on many lives.

Today, we remember not only the academic honors and professional achievements he earned, but also the blessed and exemplary life he lived, a life of faith, humility, love, kindness, and selfless service. His legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him.

The Scriptures reminds us, "For dust you are, and to dust you shall return, Genesis 3፡19". As we entrust Dr. Amare to God's eternal care, we pray that the Lord will grant him everlasting rest and surround his family and loved ones with His peace, comfort, and strength.

May the memory of Dr. Amare Abebe Shenkut always remain with us.

ለዶር አማረ አበበ ሸንቁት የተሰጠ የስንብት ቃል

ዛሬ የተሰበሰብነው በዶ/ር አማረ አበበ ሸንቁትን ሕይወተ ህልፈት ለማዘን ብቻ ሳይሆን ያሳለፉትን ህይወት ለማክበርም ነው። እርሳቸው ትሁት ባል፣ አፍቃሪ አባትና አያት፣ የተከበሩ ምሁርና ተመራማሪ፣ ትጉህ የሕዝብ አገልጋይ፣ እንዲሁም ትሁትና አዛኝ ሰው እንደነበሩም ለማስታወስ ነው።

ዶ/ር አማረ መስከረም 6 ቀን 1941 ዓ.ም. በበቆጂ ከተማ አርሲ ክፍለ ሀገር ተወለዱ። ከአንደኛና ሁለተኛ ደረጃ ትምህርት በኋላም በመምህራን ማሰልጠኛ ስልጠናን፡ በአለማያ እርሻ ኮሌጅ የመጀመሪያና የሁለተኛ ዲግሪያቸውን አግኝተዋል፣ በአሜሪካም ከኮሎራዶ ስቴት ዩኒቨርሲቲ በእርሻት ምህርትና ምርምር የዶክትሬት (Ph.D.) ዲግሪ እና በኢንፎርሜሽን ቴክኖሎጂ ሁለተኛ የማስተርስ ዲግሪ አግኝተዋል።

በሙያ ምደባዎች ሁሉ ዶ/ር አማረ በትጋት፣ በታማኝነትና በላቀ ብቃት አገልግለዋል። የሥራ ሕይወታቸውን በወለጋ ክፍለ ሀገር በመምህርነት ጀምረው፣ በኋላም በኢትዮጵያ የልማት ባንክ ሠርተዋል። ከዚያም ወደ ኢትዮጵያ የግብርና ምርምር ተቋም (EIAR) በመግባት ለኢትዮጵያ የግብርና ልማት ከፍተኛ አስተዋፅኦ አበርክተዋል። እንደ ተመራማሪ በሀረግ ባቄላ ዝርያ ምርምር ዘርፍ ወሳኝ ሚና በመጫወት ሁለት የባቄላ ዝርያዎች እንዲለቀቁ አስተዋፅኦ አድርገዋል። እነዚህም ለአገር ውስጥ ፍጆታ ተስማሚ የሆነው ሮባ (Roba) እና በዋናነት ለውጭ ገበያ የተዘጋጀው አዋሽ (Awash) ዝርያዎች ናቸው። በተጨማሪም በተለያዩ የEIAR የምርምር ማዕከላት የጥራጥሬ ሰብሎች ምርምር ቡድንን በማስተባበርና በማጠናከር የላቀ አስተዋፅኦ አድርገዋል። በምሥራቅ አፍሪካ የባቄላ ምርምር መረብ (Eastern Africa Bean Research Network) በንቃት በመሳተፍም ለኢትዮጵያ የባቄላ ማሻሻያ ፕሮግራሞች ጠቃሚ የምርምር ድጋፍ እንዲገኝ አስተዋፅኦ አበርክተዋል። በኋላም በአሜሪካ አገር ለ16 ዓመታት በዩናይትድ ስቴትስ የጉምሩክ እና የድንበር ጥበቃ (Customs and Border Protection) ተቋም የግብርና ልዩ ባለሙያ (Agriculture Specialist) ሆነው በታላቅ ትጋት አገልግለዋል።

ዶ/ር አማረ ለቤተሰባቸው የተሰጡ ባልና አባትም ነበሩ። ከባለቤታቸው ከሲስተር ዘውዲቱ አላምረው ጋር ለ48 ዓመታት በፍቅርና በመከባበር ኖረው፣ አንድ ሴት ልጅና ሁለት የልጅ ልጆችን አፍርተዋል።

ዶ/ር አማረን ያወቅን ሁሉ እንደምንመሰክረው፣ እርሳቸው ቅን፣ ታታሪ፣ ትሁት፣ አዛኝና መካሪ ሰው ነበሩ። በተለይም ወጣቶች በትምህርት መስክ እንዲያተኩሩና ልቀውም የተሻሉ ዜጎች እንዲሆኑ በመመከር በብዙዎች ሕይወት ዘላቂ አሻራን አኑረዋል።

ዛሬ የምናስታውሰው በትምህርትና በስራ ቆይታቸው ያገኙትን ማዕረግ ብቻ ሳይሆን፣ በፍቅር፣ በትህትና፣ በእምነትና በአገልግሎት ያሳለፉትን የተባረከ ምሳሌያዊ ማህበራዊ ሕይወታቸውንም ነው።

በመጽሐፍ ቅዱስ እንደተጻፈው፣ "አፈር ነህና፣ ወደ አፈርም ትመለሳለህ።" (ዘፍጥረት 3፥19)

እኛም ጊዜያችን እስኪደርስ ድረስ፣ ሁሉን ቻይ ፈጣሪ የዶ/ር አማረን ነፍስ በአጸደ ገነት እንዲያሳርፍ፣ ለቤተሰቦቻቸው፣ ለወዳጅ ዘመዶቻቸውና ለሁሉም ወዳጆቻቸው መጽናናትን፣ ሰላምንና ብርታትን እንዲሰጣቸው ከልብ እንመኛለን።

ፈጣሪ ነፍሳቸውን በአጸደ ገነት ያሳርፍልን፤ ለቤተሰቦቻቸውና ወዳጆቻቸው መጽናናትንና ሰላሙን ይስጠን።

የዶ/ር አማረ አበበ ሸንቁት ትውስታ ሁሌም ከእኛ ጋር ይኑር።
