Bernita Catherine Johnson passed into the hands of the Lord on February 22, 2016 surrounded by loved ones in her home. She was just three days shy of her 90th Birthday. Bernita, the daughter of Anton and Anna Rome, was born in St. Peter, Kansas on February 25, 1926. She was preceded in death by her husband William E. Johnson. Bernita is survived by her children Gary Johnson, Jay Johnson, Janet Johnson, and Jane Ritchie, 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Family was everything to Bernita. Her homes were warm and inviting. She treasured her relationship with parents, aunts, uncles and cousins. A large German family surrounded her with love for decades. Bernita was strong and courageous, determined and aware, straightforward and honest. Her life reflected her beliefs and her faith and love of God carried her through the storms of life.
Bernita was a beautiful woman with a caring heart. Staying very active in her faith, she volunteered 18 years of service to Queen of Peace Catholic Church where she organized funeral services. She was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Bernita was wise intuitive mother who taught her family the importance of many virtues. Be kind, be honest, have patience, take responsibility for your actions, learn from mistakes. Forgive and forgive again!
Children brought out her playful side. Babies felt warm and safe in her arms as they cuddled by her loving heart. Her grandchildren placed a spark in her eye and a smile on her face that said I love you!
Her love of family, her marriage, her career, her children, the little things in life, the mountains, picnics, dancing, football, music, fabulous dinner parties… all of this and more created a rich and blessed life for Bernita.
May all of those who knew her remember the best of her, the many great dinner parties, the laughter and the light she brought to our lives. Let’s not forget her pies!
Heaven welcomes Bernita.
