Betty Sweeney Wickstrom

April 13, 1925July 6, 2018

Betty Sweeney Wickstrom, age 93 passed away on Friday July 6, 2018.

Betty was born to Hazel Arvidson and Nels Victor Locker on April 13, 1925.

Betty loved her family and brought joy to those around her. She was proud of her Swedish heritage and traditions and made the best Swedish Rye bread.

Betty was a homemaker for many years, looking after her husband and three girls. Family trips to Glenwood Springs were a tradition with joyous singing to pass the time. Betty shared her love of Glenwood with her grandchildren.

Betty loved her church, serving as church secretary for over 40 years. She was devoted to God and she would often say, “My Church, My Church, My Dear Old Church.”

The family cabin was the host for many years of family reunions with laughing, crazy games and great food. The cabin walls are covered with mementos of these years.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband Lee Sweeney and then her husband Clarence Wickstrom, and her sister Elaine Ohlman. She is survived by her three daughters Sandy, Diane and Laurie, 5 grand children and 10 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 26, 2018, at Bethany Lutheran Church, 4500 E. Hampden Ave., Cherry Hills Village, CO 80113. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall at Bethany and a committal service will occur following the reception in the courtyard at Bethany.

My memory of Betty goes back nealy 80 years. Her folks and my aunt/uncle lived near one another in lower East Denver. All of us were part of "old" Bethany on 38th and Gilpin, before it relocated to Cherry Hills Village.

Betty is one of the last "links" to that congregation and has been an important part of today's Bethany for many years. I called on her often the year I was part of the staff with Pastor Deb and had the privelege of introducing Pastor Gary to her when he began his ministry. She did not always remember that I had called on her at the Masonic Home where she lived out her last years; but she always knew who I was and my history of with the congregation she loved so well.

She knew me too well, in one sense. She was the only person outside of my family who loved to call me "junior."
Technically, I am not a "Jr" but that was a family nickname....and I think when she used that name, it meant I was not only part of her history...but of her large family of friends who loved her dearly. May she rest peacefully in the arms of God.
