

David J. Menzies, a well-known Denver criminal defense attorney and longtime resident of Denver, died at Rose Hospital in Denver, Colorado, on August 21 at the age of 70 of a sudden heart attack.
Mr. Menzies was born on February 9, 1940, in Topeka, Kansas. He graduated in 1958 from Luckey High School in Manhattan, Kansas, received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1962, and earned his law degree from the University of Kansas Law School in 1970.
He subsequently commenced his legal career at the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, was a prosecutor at the Arapahoe District Attorney’s Office, and later practiced for many years as a major felony and misdemeanor defense attorney.
Mr. Menzies was an active member of the Colorado and Kansas Bar Associations, the Denver Kiwanis, the Denver Notre Dame Club, and the Catholic Church of Good Sheperd. He is survived by his fiancee, Dr. Kathleen Albi; his two sisters, Kathleen Lesko and Mary Pat Heath; and his niece, Gwin Heath, and three nephews, Mark Lesko, Bob Lesko, and Ryan Heath.
In addition to his legal career Mr. Menzies was known for his lifelong passion for and encyclopedic knowledge of sports, which he generously shared with all who knew him. For most of his life he was an avid fan of the Denver Rockies, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and the Kansas Jayhawks.
A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, August 24, at 10:30am at the Church of Good Sheperd in Denver.
