Dorothy May Randolph was born on December 2, 1938, in Waysburg, Mississippi to parents David and Olivia (Andrews) Gordon. When Dorothy was just seven years old her mother unexpectedly passed away. Dorothy went to live with her loving Aunt Angeline and her family in Hammond, Louisiana until her marriage. She attended and graduated from Greenville Park High School and attended the Community College of Aurora in her later years.
On June 28, 1958, Dorothy was united in holy matrimony with James Edward Randolph, Jr. at Greenfield Baptist Church in Ponchatoula, LA. They were blessed with five precious children, James, Darryl, Jacqueline, Joyce, and Donald. As her husband served in the US Air Force for 23 years, Dorothy loved being part of a military family and living in such places as California, Kansas, Florida, Colorado, Germany, and Spain.
Dorothy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who loved her God with all her heart, soul, mind, and strength. She devotedly attended all her children’s extra-curricular activities and awards ceremonies. She was devoted in her ministry with the Lord, and even founded the Pearls of Wisdom; a prayer group that still meets every morning by phone. She was an active member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Denver, CO and performed numerous duties as an Usher, Deaconess, Sunday school teacher and assisting with church services at the local homeless shelters. She served on a mission trip to inner city Alabama where she blessed others by serving in a hospital.
She kept herself busy being a supporting wife and mother to five children whom she taught to fully love and respect the Lord. Even with raising a family Dorothy found time in her busy schedule to serve as a Girl Scout troop leader, be a caregiver for handicapped children, volunteered as a Morning Star Angel by visiting seniors confined to their beds, Bible Study leader for Volunteers of America Domestic Violence Shelter in Denver, CO and even enjoyed ballroom dance lessons. In her senior years she loved to travel across America in a motorhome.
Her children continued her legacy of serving others in their career choices of military service, fire department, overseas missionary, and caregiver. Dorothy had numerous hobbies that she was passionate about. She enjoyed traveling, reading, word puzzles, poetry, theatre, writing/performing One- Act Christian dramas and helping others in Christian ministry. She even learned to play the piano at the age of 60 and enjoyed performing recitals.
She received the fitness award from Brookdale Senior Community, acting accolades award and military awards. She enjoyed cruises to Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. Her travels included 3 of the 7 continents (Africa, North America, and Europe).
When her children were teenagers and young adults, Dorothy pursued part-time employment; to include an entrepreneurial stint supplying a restaurant with baked goods. She was very proud to have owned and sold two family homes as the sole buyer. Towards the end of her life Dorothy maintained her abilities to explore and love life. She was learning to play the harmonica and writing another One-Act Christian Drama “A Trip to the House of Job”. She always had the desire to own a Christian home for unwed pregnant teens. She often talked about her desire to start a college scholarship fund to enable young people to pursue education and learning.
On March 20, 2022, the sun set on the earthly life of Dorothy May Randolph, as the Lord called her home to the Eternal Sunrise. She is proceeded in death by her husband James E. Randolph, Jr., and son James E. Randolph III (died at the age of 5). Those left to cherish her memory and who will truly miss her include sons Darryl J. Randolph of Denver, CO and Donald E.
