He returned to Sublette for a time and met Helen Ruby Nelson who had moved with her family into the house next door in 1947. They first spent time together at youth group at church while Helen was still in High School. Elbert returned to Wichita and worked at Beech Aircraft Company and then went on to work for The Boeing Company in Wichita all the while Helen and Elbert wrote letters to each other. Elbert married the girl next door in Sublette, Kansas, January 18, 1953 and they were married for 67 years and they had two children.

He made people feel welcome when they came to church. He carried a little book in his suit pocket to record the contact information of every guest and kept in contact with them. He always made everyone feel welcome. He taught Sunday school and visited the sick in hospitals, nursing homes, and shut ins.
He was also an avid sports fan who followed all the Denver teams, especially his beloved Broncos.
