Florence M. Champ, of Denver, CO, passed away on Thursday, September 20, 2018, at Manor Care Nursing Home, at the age of 94. She was born on January 23, 1924, in Hartford, Wisconsin to the late Paul and Anna Schellinger.
Following her marriage to James Champ on November 12, 1949, she started her married life as the wife of a career Naval Noncommissioned Officer. They traveled to various parts of the world with their two children, living in places as diverse as Hutchinson, Kansas to Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.
After retiring from the Navy, they settled in the Milwaukee area where they opened several local restaurants. Florence worked at their neighborhood restaurant, Champs Kitchen. Their next move was out to Pueblo West, Colorado. There, Florence was involved in the Ladies Golf Club, Bridge Club, bowling and various other social activities. She was also very involved in activities with St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.
James preceded Florence in death on December 3, 2004. Survivors include two children, Linda (Roger Dickson) Champ of Aurora, CO, and Paul Champ of Las Vegas, NV. Florence is also survived by her brother Peter (Joan) Schellinger, of Port Washington, WI, and her sister Eleanor (Ken) Hyland of Hartford, WI; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her brother Raymond Schellinger (2013) and sisters, Irene Kuechler (2012) and Lucy Malban (2017).
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at 10:30 AM at Olinger Hampden Mortuary, 8600 East Hampden Ave, Denver, CO 80231. A military burial for James and Florence will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery on October 19, 2018 at 11:30 AM, Staging Area "B".
The family has requested donations be made to Encompass Hospice or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
