Fred was born January 13, 1930, in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of Alexander and Mary Ann Christie Lee Calvert. He grew up in West Drummoyne and attended Drummoyne Primary School and Govan High School between 1942 and 1944. Fred played football (soccer) in high school until a knee injury forced him to spend an extended period recuperating at home. As an avid and gifted player, Fred excelled at the sport and played for the local Boys Club, Glasgow, and ultimately for the Scottish national youth team.
Fred served in the Royal Airforce from 1951 to 1953. He received his degree in Electrical Engineering from Stow College in Glasgow. The following year, Fred, his wife Jean, and 8-week-old daughter Linda left Scotland for a new life in the United States. Fred and Jean were blessed with a second daughter, Sandra, in 1957, and a third daughter, Carol, in 1965. In 1963, Fred opened his own electrical consulting firm in Denver, CO.
As a passionate golfer, Fred was a member of Valley Country Club, and traveled the country with his family on many golf vacations. He loved music, good food (especially sweets), and was a proud Scotsman. During his later years, Fred would take an extended trip to his beloved home country. One of the biggest thrills of his life was to play the old course at St. Andrews. His academic brilliance, strong work ethic, infectious smile, and spirit are well-known.
Fred is survived by three daughters, Linda (John) Witulski, Sandra (Bob) Burkhart, and Carol Calvert all of Parker, CO. Fred has seven grandchildren, Kirk Witulski, Krista (Travis) Brown, Kenda (Ryan) Brown, Ariel Burkhart, Lauren (TJ) Jakopec, Jared and Reid Hahn; and seven great-grandchildren, Christian Witulski, Isaac and Bailey Brown, Landon and Keaton Brown, and Troy and Cooper Jakopec and his sister, Ruth Crum.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jean, his older brother Alexander, a Scottish Airways radio officer, killed in Milngavie, Scotland in 1946.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 20, with visitation at 9:00 a.m. and a service at 10:00 a.m., at Olinger Hampden Memorial Gardens, 8600 E. Hampden Avenue, Denver, Colorado.
