Gertraud was born November 28, 1935 in Augsburg, Germany to Leonhard Haugg and Theresia (Jungbeck) Haugg. She grew up in Southern Germany amidst the throes of World War II. It was here she would later meet and marry her former husband, Jack Morris, a soldier in the U.S. Army. Her former husband’s Army career afforded Gertraud and their two children many tours and opportunities to travel, often rotating between stations in Germany and the United States (Tennessee, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and later Colorado). Colorado became the family’s permanent home in the early 1970s. It was at this point that Gertraud impressed upon her children the importance of education at the same time she herself entered the workforce at the City of Aurora, where she worked until she retired. Gertraud was an advocate for the environment and loved the outdoors. She especially enjoyed swimming, hiking, skiing, and snowshoeing. She was a member of both the Colorado Mountain Club and the Gates Ski Club. She also loved touring the outdoors, especially various National Parks across the United States, as well as trips abroad to New Zealand, the Black Forest, and Croatia. Gertraud had a great appreciation for the arts, both musical and visual, and held keen interests in impressionist painting and museum education. She loved spending time with her family and friends and was well known by all for her great sense of humor, exceptional cooking and baking, and personal passion for the many charities and causes she cared about.
Surviving are two brothers: Hardi Haugg (Otti) and Manfred Haugg; her two children: Robert Morris (Kelly) and Rebecca Dunlap (Jeff); grandchildren: Kristina Montaquila (Eben), and Karin Ewald (Eric); great-grandchildren: Archer, Ford, and Avery; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Gertraud was preceded in death by her Mother, Father, and brothers Werner and Helmut.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends both in the United States and in Germany.
Donations may be made in Gertraud’s memory to Doctors without Borders or Save the Whales. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.olingerhampdenmortuary.com for the Morris family.
