Martin Erwin Sutton was born on June 23, 1941 in Wellston, Ohio. He was the 13th and youngest addition to the blended family of Widower Martin Luther Sutton, born May 27, 1884 in Champaign County, Ohio and Widow Daisy Geneva (Mundy) Sutton, born November 10, 1899 in Wellston, Ohio.
Marty was an emotional, animated, and extroverted individual. Marty loved to talk about his life and experiences. He would talk story to any and all who would listen. When Marty would tell listeners about his childhood he would usually open it up by saying “I grew up a farmer” then he would laugh, pause and follow up with “the crops we were plant’n you didn’t want to come up out of the ground”. Marty would then clarify how he actually grew up in a cemetery. He would be specific and explain to his listener that his childhood home was located in the middle of a cemetery. Marty went on to explain how his father was a sexton also known as a gravedigger or burial grounds custodian and his mother was the book keeper for the cemetery. His mother would tend to the books and his father prepared graves and cared for the cemetery grounds. He would share how he was conscripted into the family business. Marty joked about how at a very young age he mastered the skills in the use of the pick and shovel.
He loved to sit on his front porch and take in the fresh Colorado air and occasionally enjoying a cigarette. He would yell HELLO and wave to people as they passed by.
Marty’s profession was with what was at that time the only telephone company in the Rocky Mountain region. He was a Central Office Technician. He retired after 33 years of dedicated service on March 01, 2006.
Marty specialized in the repair and maintenance of the telephone companies intricate warning and alarm systems. His position had him traveling and working throughout a tri-state region to include not only an urban settings but also remote areas of the Rocky Mountains.
Marty loved his work with the telephone company but he held firm to and loved his God and religious convictions. In his mid-40s Marty was so moved by his love of his God and religious beliefs that he became an Ordained minister and enrolled in an online course of study offered by The Full Gospel Baptist College. Marty completed the course of study and ultimately obtained his Associate Degree.
Marty did not use his religious education for a career change or money but rather he gave numerous hours of his time every weekend for 18 years volunteering in several nursing homes through out the Denver metro area to visit and minister to our “forgotten treasures” the elderly.
Marty like all of us experienced emotionally taxing, difficult and devastating times. On February 3, 2008 Marty was shocked and devastated when he was notified of the unexpected death of his only daughter Geneva. Geneva was found deceased on their sofa by her teenage son Joshua Sutton after returning home to their residence located in Pueblo, Colorado. Geneva was only 42 years old when she passed.
It was on June 7, 2020 Marty found himself again completely lost, hurt, alone, and heartbroken. He was awoken by the words “she’s leaving us” by Betty’s overnight home caregiver. Marty could only sit dumbfounded and powerless as he watched his wife Betty of 57 years quietly pass away in their home located on Wolff street home in Berkeley, Denver, Colorado. Sadly Marty never really recovered from the loss of his only daughter Geneva and his loving wife Betty.
On Sunday September 14, 2025 at approximately 10:45am Mountain Daylight Time 84 year old Martin Erwin Sutton (A.K.A. Marty) was found deceased in his home located on Wolff street in Berkeley, Denver, Colorado by his only son Martin Luther Sutton III.
Marty will always be loved and missed. We can take solace and find comfort in the knowledge that Marty can now hear again with out hearing aids. He can see without eyeglasses. He is now without pain and not in need of morphine. He has transcended to a much better place. Marty has been reunited with his mother, father, 12 brothers and sister, his only daughter Geneva and yes his beloved wife Betty.
Marty is preceded in death by His Father Martin Luther Sutton, His Mother Daisy Geneva (Mundy) Sutton, His twelve Brothers and Sisters, His Wife Betty Irene (Littleton) Sutton, and his only Daughter Geneva Louise Sutton.
