Walter Robert Williams was born on August 12, 1986, in Denver, Colorado to Rachel Ann Robinson Williams and the late Walter Lewis Williams. He was known as Robert to his family, “Wobby” to his sisters, and by many other monikers to his many friends – Bob or Bobert on most days, but “A Luscious” or “Castro” when in performance-mode. His nieces nicknamed him “Sponge-Robert” and “Nodaddybob Beardpants.”
When Robert was an infant, his father Walt accepted a job in the East, moving Rachel, Robert, and his two older sisters, Liz and Diane, to Connecticut. Robert’s early words were pronounced with a distinctly New England accent. After Walt’s tragic death in July 1989, Rachel moved the children back home to Colorado to be close to family.
Robert attended his first years of elementary school at Sabin Elementary in Denver. In 1993 Rachel was remarried to Robert’s stepfather, Michael Weissmann, and they moved the children to Thornton in 1994. Robert attended Tarver Elementary, then Westlake Middle School, Century Middle School and finished at Horizon High School. The Thornton house in those years became a gathering place for Robert’s friends, with long sessions of video games filling their days, accompanied by nearly unlimited snacks. He enjoyed traveling with his family on trips that included visiting friends and family in Connecticut, Washington DC, California, Florida, Hawaii, and even Venezuela and South Africa.
After graduating high school, Robert attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, studying art and exploring various mediums. Film became a favorite, but he also enjoyed drawing and painting. After leaving CU, he and several of his friends bought a house together on Clay Street in Westminster. This house was a “bachelor pad” and a center for gatherings, with at least ten roommates living there at various times over the years. There was also an “open couch policy” where “couch surfers” could always find a welcome place to stay for a night or more. Robert enjoyed camping in the mountains with his many friends and roommates.
Robert was an ultimate performer. He was a member of the Boylesque Troupe at Ooh La La Presents in Denver and enjoyed many performances with that group. He also worked Bar Back at the Rear Inn Lounge in Westminster prior to its close in 2016, where he would often take the stage to sing karaoke. His majestic beard was as much a part of his personality as it was his physical being. In recent years he studied gourmet cooking while interning at Five Star to You and had plans to be a chef before covid lockdowns began.
He will be greatly missed by many. He is survived by his mother Rachel Williams and his stepfather Michael Weissmann; his sisters Liz Loos (Nick) and Diane Oddo (Garry); his nieces Tyler Beavers, Alexis and Adison Lovato, Kylie Jackson, and soon to be born niece; and grandfathers Robert Robinson and John Williams; plus many aunts, uncles and cousins. Instead of flowers, please send donations in his memory to the Donor Alliance (www.donoralliance.org) or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org) – these are charities that Robert fully supported and believed in.
