Wilsie Mae Schroeder, age 88, of Uniontown, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, September 26,2023 in Holly Heights Nursing Home in Denver, Colorado.
Wilsie was born on September 20,1935, at the family home in Calf Creek, Kentucky to Sarah Ann Fluty Hunt and Montgomery (Mont) Hunt. Mont Hunt died while Wilsie was a baby and that was her biggest regret not knowing him. Wilsie was preceded in death by her brothers Garland Cassell, Everette Cassell, Taylor Vinson and her sister, Edith Marie Bowen Hackney.
Wilsie, during her formative years, attended school in a one room Fluty-Lick Schoolhouse in Martin County, Kentucky. As a girl, Wilsie enjoyed crossing the Tug River bridge to visit her Aunt Julia Marcum
and whenever she had the chance to go to the movies. She loved listening to her older sister, Edith, strumming on the guitar. Later, she attended and graduated high school from the Foundation School of
Berea College in Berea, Kentucky. While attending Foundation School of Berea, she had the opportunity to go to Chicago, Illinois with a school friend, Jeanniene (Nean) Turner Posey, and they both worked for Montgomery Ward retail store in the accounting department for the summer. Exciting times for a young lady from Calf Creek, Kentucky.
Upon graduation, Wilsie enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1957 serving as an Airman Second Class and medical technician assigned to the 1608Th USAF Dispensary at the Charleston Air Force Base in Charleston, South Carolina. While in the Air Force she met her future husband, Hans Schroeder. After a whirlwind romance, Wilsie and Hans were married on May 23, 1959 by a Charleston County judge. Wilsie continued to work in the medical field as a nurse’s aide in nursing homes and hospitals in New Jersey and later Ohio. She always enjoyed spending time with friends and family whether it was going to the annual August family reunion in Calf Creek, Kentucky or going swimming, boating, camping and vacationing with her family. She loved sharing her stories of her childhood and the old family home place either by writing letters or conversing with them. Wilsie was most especially proud of her three grandchildren.
Wilsie is survived by her two daughters, Renata and her husband, Randy West of Uniontown, Ohio and Barbara and her husband, Lou Springer of Parker, Colorado along with her grandchildren Tyler Speer, Erin Celeste Springer and Michelle and her husband Kyren Ellingford. Her niece, Dorothy Wellman of Huntington, WV and nephews Garlin Hackney of Kingman, Arizona and John Hackney of Columbus, Ohio. A special thank you to Wilsie’s home to Trinity Church of the Nazarene in Uniontown, Ohio for their support and prayers after the passing of Wilsie’s husband, Hans.
A memorial service for Wilsie will be held Wednesday, October 4, 2023 from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM at Olinger Hampden Mortuary & Cemetery, 8600 East Hampden Ave, Denver, CO 80231, followed by a reception from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM.
