A kind-hearted soul throughout his life, Barry exemplified the core pillars of the Benevolent Order of the Elks: charity, justice, brotherly love, and fidelity. Barry graduated IIT with a Bachelor’s degree in business but soon found he loved the more active and social life of a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service which he held until he retired after 35 years. A devoted Bears and White Sox fan, Barry never strayed from his fandom even in the toughest of seasons. His role as a brother, uncle, great uncle, and godfather gave him the greatest joy which was displayed with the many photos throughout his home.
Time spent with those he loved created lasting memories that he cherished deeply. As an Elk brother, Barry connected with people who held the same core values, and he left an irreplaceable mark on all his brothers and sisters at Elks Lodge #1526 in Des Plaines. In the last few years he met many people at his new apartment complex where he was welcomed and brightened everyone’s day with his sense of humor. What most showed Barry’s character was his determination and hard work to maintain his independence after his diagnosis with Parkinson’s Disease. No matter where he went, Barry always left an impression on those who interacted with him. He loved to connect with everyone and left them smiling. Everyone is greater for having him in their life, and he will be deeply missed.
Born on October 11, 1953, in Chicago to the late Harry and Eleanor, Barry was the beloved brother of Kathy (the late Bob) Rumpf, Christine Julian, and Deb (Jim) Moss. Cherished uncle of Erin (Josh) Rozek and Jim (Jessica) Moss; adored great uncle of Trevor and Austin Rozek; and friend to many former IIT classmates, United States Postal Service coworkers, and brother and sister Elks.
