Gerald spent his childhood in Schiller Park and attended East Leyden High School. He later proudly served his country as a United States Marine during the Vietnam War.
In his younger years, Gerald had a passion for drag racing and cars. He was also an avid bowler for many years and enjoyed fishing whenever he had the chance. He appreciated a good cigar, too, and continued many of the things he enjoyed for as long as he was able.
Gerald was tolerant of others, but he was also unapologetically himself. He had his own way of looking at the world and never felt much need to pretend to be someone he wasn't.
He is survived by his wife, Debra Koenig; his brother, Michael Koenig; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Barbara Koenig; his brothers, Kenneth Koenig and Donald Koenig; and his sister, Linda.
He will be remembered for his service to his country, the things he loved, the life he lived on his own terms, and the memories he leaves with family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on September 26, 2026, at Oehler Funeral Home, 2099 Miner Street, Des Plaines, IL.
