March 4, 1934 – October 12, 2025
Gust James Poulos, age 91, of Mount Prospect, Illinois, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on October 12, 2025.
Born on March 4, 1934, Gust grew up in Chicago, the sixth of eight sons. After graduating from high school, he faithfully served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. When he returned home, he married his high school sweetheart, Delores, on April 7, 1956.
Gust gave his life to Christ at a Youth For Christ rally in Chicago when he returned home from his service in the Army, a decision that shaped the rest of his life. His deep faith in Jesus Christ was the foundation of his character, his marriage, and his service to others. He was a longtime member of Des Plaines Bible Church, where he served faithfully as a deacon and an Awana leader, impacting countless lives through his quiet strength, humility, and love for the Lord.
Throughout his life, he dedicated his career to hard work and helping others — working for the postal service, as a sheet metal fabricator, an on-site manager of a private housing complex, and an HVAC technician. Known as a true handyman, Gust could fix just about anything and was always willing to lend a hand where it was needed.
Those who knew Gust will remember his warm smile, his generosity, and his genuine care for people. He never met a stranger — everyone he encountered quickly became a friend.
He is survived by his wife, Delores, and their children Michael (Becky) Poulos, Steve (Maria) Poulos, and Cyndi (Tim) Metling. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Mikaela, Demetrius, Megan, Madeline, MJ, Gus, and Trevor. He is also survived by his brother, William Poulos.
Gust was preceded in death by his parents, James and Jennie Poulos, and his brothers Tony, Ernie, Sam, Alex, Pete, and George.
Gust’s life was marked by faith, service, and devotion to his family. His legacy of love, integrity, high work ethic and steadfast belief in Christ will continue to inspire all who knew him.
A visitation for Gust will be held at the Oehler Funeral Home (2099 Miner Street, Des Plaines, IL 60016) on Saturday, October 25, 2025 from 10:00am until 12:00pm with the funeral immediately following at 12:00pm. A private family burial will be held at Memory Gardens in Arlington Heights. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Gust’s memory may be made to Harvest Home Farm (W16303 Simonson Rd, Whitehall, WI 54773) or you can go to the website at: https://harvesthomefarm.org/.
