

He was born on January 25, 1929, in Jaeryung, Hwanghae Province, Korea, to Bong Hak Song and Sung Gil Jung, the eldest of seven children: Joung Hyun, Yoo Soon, Soo Hyun, Moon Ja, Shin Ja, and Ok Soon.
He graduated from Seoul National University College of Medicine in 1952 and earned his Ph.D. in Medicine from Seoul National University in 1966.
Dr. Song served as a medical officer during the Korean War with the 21st Division, 63rd Army Hospital, and HID, and was discharged with the rank of Major. He later served as Director of the Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province Public Health Office, where he also established a private practice. He went on to serve as a medical officer for the Malaysian government and as Director of the Malaria Eradication Project in Malaysia, a joint effort between the Korean Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization.
In 1972, he immigrated from Malaysia to the United States with his family. He worked as a general and pediatric physician at Elgin Mental Health Center from 1975 to 1986, and later as an attending physician at Sherman Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin for over 25 years. In 1981, he served as Chief of the Department of Pediatrics at Sherman Hospital. During this time, he also maintained a private pediatric practice in Hoffman Estates, where he cared for many families in the Korean and Japanese communities.
He was elected President of the Seoul National University Alumni Association, Chicago Chapter, in 1993. A devoted man of faith, he served as a deacon at The Bridge Fellowship Church of Chicago. He enjoyed golf, fishing, reading, writing, and traveling with his family.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Suk Kyong; his sisters, Yoo Soon, Shin Ja, and Ok Soon; his children, Chi Yong, Airan, and Tim; his grandchildren, Theodore, Leonard, Thomas, Jennifer, Steven, Paul, and Elizabeth; and his great-grandchildren, Ruby, Oliver, Isabella, and Marnie.
A visitation for Jae Hyun will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2026 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Oehler Funeral Home, 2099 Miner Street, Des Plaines, IL, followed by a celebration of life service at 6:00 PM.
A funeral service will take place on Friday, May 8, 2026 at 10:00 AM at Oehler Funeral Home, followed at 11:30 AM by a committal service at Ridgewood Cemetery, 9900 Milwaukee Avenue, Des Plaines, IL.
