Dick shared one of the greatest love stories of our times with his beloved wife Leslie A. (Fruh) Nelson. Sharing a life of travel and laughter, they called Palatine their home with best fur friend Ozzie who was always by his side.
Dick kept his wife and sons Jason & Ryan Nelson laughing and feeling loved the weeks leading up to his passing on September 18, 2021. In his final days a chaplain came to visit bedside to console Dick, and in a comforting voice said “God’s mansion in the sky is awaiting you”, Dick quipped “Well it better not be a fixer upper!” That was the great thing about Dick. “Even as a child, he could take the most serious of moments and turn them into comic relief,” remembers his brother, Tom Nelson.
He lead a life of service both as a decorated war veteran and as a hard-working telephone lineman for over 40 yrs.
He was an extremely loving and committed father to Jason Nelson, Ryan Nelson, Dena (Dan) Zell, and Rogers F. Nugent; grandfather of Ryan and Zachary; dear brother of Tom (Judy) Nelson, William (Karen) Nelson; fond uncle of many nieces and nephews.
A committal service for Richard will be held Monday, September 27, 2021 starting at 10:30 am at Ridgewood Memorial Park, 9900 N Milwaukee Ave, Des Plaines, IL 60016. Fond memories, expressions of sympathy, and flowers may be shared at www.OehlerFuneralHome.com
