Steve Thomas Janes went suddenly home to Jesus on November 13, 2020 at age 67. Loving and devoted husband to Peggy J. nee Herling for 27 years sharing the love for the Lord, friends, and family.

Steve was the beloved son of the late George F. Janes and the late Joan M. (nee Newman) Janes; faithful stepson of Barbara Janes; great brother to Glen, Larry, and the late Kathleen Janes; caring son-in-law to Maureen A. Herling and the late Thomas A. Herling; kind-hearted brother in law to Sean (Kathy) Herling, Dan (Ron) Herling, Rosanne (William) Laurino, Thomas P. (Eva) Herling the late Nancy Herling, the late Anthony (Sharon) Herling, Eileen (Darryl) Corter, and fond uncle of 14 nieces and nephews and 11 great nieces and nephews. Faithful friend too many.

Steve was born on the south side of Chicago and attended St. Barnabus and then Brother Rice Highschool where he received 2 full academic college scholarships but only attended 2 years as he worked full time to support his family.

He was employed at multiple Fox’s Family Restaurants, which became his second home, then went on to be the proud owner of a successful pizzeria for 3 years and later sold all to follow Christ.

Steve’s home church was Maranatha Chapel, where he made many wonderful friends, until moving to the Northside to work in Ministry. He humbly ministered for 18 years at Chicago Teen Challenge a ministry he loved and dedicated himself too, his hope was to open a transitional home with ex-offenders.

Steve enjoyed history, reading, movies, telling jokes, and feeding any backyard animals. He was a great conversationalist, writer, and patriot. Ron and I were fortunate to live less then a block away from Steve and Peggy. We knew first hand that Steve was a great man and an awesome husband. While walking our dog Tanner at 6:45am Steve would be clearing the snow off Peggy’s car with her lunch and a hot coffee for her ride to work. We enjoyed many BBQ and holiday dinners at our home together, what a blessing those were. You were a kind gentle man and could talk about any topic with knowledge. Peggy as I told Steve before we will always be here for you! 💔🙏😘

We are so thankful for Steve's presence in our lives over the past 28yrs.. He continually prayed for me, Darryl and our children every step of the way through all the years, as he and Peg showered us with many blessings, always.
When I had a major surgery a couple years ago, Steve was right along side my sister at the hospital, asking the surgical team questions and being an advocate for me. During my recovery Steve called often & prayed with me. Steve loved dropping off many wonderful meals he made for us, all along knowing our chats at dropoff would always last most of the afternoon as we both shared the "gift of gab". I was grateful to know we were actually ministering to one another during our convos as he was recovering physically too, yet he was always thinking of us first and initiating our time well spent. I looked forward to those times as I had matured in life but I do remember when I was younger I would shrug those intense and/or personal conversations off. Wow, how my perspective had changed along the years and I wish I had just one more looooonngg conversation with sweet Steve to tell him how very much he meant to us.
Rejoice Eternally Brother Steve, you loved and served us with the love of Christ always.

Condolences to the family. I will always remember the day I met Steve, when him and Peggy attended my baptism last year. Thank you for supporting my journey in the Lord.

My brother, sister, and I were first introduced to Uncle Steve by our Aunt Peggy as "Uncle Buck" and it always stuck with us. Aunt Peggy and Uncle Steve were always the first ones to offer up help and to be there for every member of our large and crazy family. Uncle Steve will always be with us through prayer, faith, and acceptance of Christ in our lives. Rest easy "Uncle Buck".

Steve was a true friend and brother. His heart was big enough to go 360 degrees around the world, and then some. I'm just glad there will be a little time and space until I see my dearest friend and brother again. I'm also praying God's special comfort for all Steve's friends and family. I'll see you again later Steve!!!

Steve was an amazing example of loving God, family, and his neighbors. Everyone was a neighbor to him because he was always looking for ways to encourage and help others. Our prayers are with Peggy, his family, and all their "neighbors" as they mourn.

I’m very sorry for your loss, Peggy! Steve was an amazing guy who cared deeply for people. He was my childhood hero and I’ll never forget the Birthday and Christmas gifts, and the times we played the guitar together. Heaven is receiving one of the best!

Sorry to hear of your loss Peggy and family. Steve seemed like a really great guy who loved the Lord and loved people. What a great testimony from one of his former students at teen challenge. Think of all the lives he touched through his ministry. I really enjoyed meeting him. My only regret is not being able to get to know him better. Love cousin Joe and family. Hope to live stream service Saturday.
