

Wallace Joseph Meyer, 84, of Schaumburg, formerly of Des Plaines, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 3rd, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 28th, 1932, to Wallace F. and Margaret H. (nee Weiskopf) Meyer in Chicago, he was a 1954 graduate of Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with a degree in Political Science. He would go on to become an insurance broker, first with the Firemen’s Fund, and later retiring as Vice President at Alexander & Alexander. He was married on September 10th, 1955 to his loving wife, Florence (nee Morrison). This union was blessed with three children, Jim (Cathy) Meyer, Julia Pusey, and Eileen (Pete) Ganster. He was a doting grandfather to Sean and Steven Meyer, Brianna Pusey, and Kayla Ganster and fond father-in-law of Andrew Pusey. Also surviving him are his brother, Bruce (Georgia) Meyer, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Florence.
Wallace believed strongly in being involved with his community. He served as a member of the Des Plaines District 62 school board from 1974 to 1978 and was President from 1979 to 1980. After retirement, he was a member and President of the Friends of Des Plaines Library for many years. He was fortunate to have many lifelong friendships. A true North Sider, he was a long-suffering, but loyal and die-hard, Cubs fan. One of his favorite hobbies was watching the Cubs games with his family. Classical music was also a passion and he especially enjoyed attending performances at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Wally loved traveling. He visited 49 of the 50 states and several foreign countries, his favorites being Switzerland and Ireland. A wake will be held Sunday, May 7 at Oehler Funeral Home in Des Plaines from 3:00 pm to 7 pm. The funeral will follow the next day at 10:00 am at Immanuel Lutheran Church is Des Plaines. Donations can be made to the Friends of the Des Plaines Public Library, the American Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice.
