Yong-Kyoo Song

Yong-Kyoo was born on June 1st, 1939 in South Korea. After graduating from Seoul National University, Yong-Kyoo met Douk-Sook, at SIU in Cedar Falls. He was getting his Masters in Microbiology and she was visiting her older sister. They fell in love almost instantly and were lifelong partners. Soon after, Rea was born in Inchon, South Korea and then Cathy in Honolulu, Hawaii five years later. He went on to obtain a masters in Marine Biology at the University of Hawaii and a PhD in Education from Penn State.

Later he landed a job as the Electron-microscopist at the Jardine Water Filtration Plant in Chicago which kickstarted a 30+ year career in studying diatoms.

A Celebration of life service will be held on Monday, January 8, 2024 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Oehler Funeral Home, 2099 Miner St, Des Plaines, IL 60016. A graveside service for Yong-Kyoo will be held Monday, January 8, 2024 from 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM at Ridgewood Memorial Park Cemetery, 9900 N Milwaukee Ave, Des Plaines, IL 60016.
