Zoraida Vazquez Flores, 74, earned her wings on May 27, 2020, surrounded by her family at home. It would be wrong to say that she lost her battle with cancer because she was a warrior who never stopped fighting and her faith persevered through her eight-year battle with Lymphoma. She is preceded in death by her son, Fadel, her parents, and four brothers.
Zoraida Vazquez was born in Sabana Eneas, San German, Puerto Rico. Zoraida “Zory” as she was affectionally called was the fourth out of eight children of Ramon Vazquez and Matilde Flores. Zory married her one and only love Moises Abraham Castillo and shortly thereafter moved to Chicago, where she raised her family.
Zory lived her life with determination and an endless devotion to God. She treasured making memories with family, which included her church family. Her passion, however, was cooking and feeding her loved ones or anyone she encountered. This stemmed from her many years of working in the restaurant industry. She lived to comfort people with food and everyone was welcome at her table. And she never hesitated to help anyone in need and always encouraged others to do the same.
Zory was very proud of her family and would show off pictures of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to anyone and everyone. She was a social butterfly who loved music and traveling. She often journeyed back to her beloved island, Puerto Rico, to love on her family and enjoy the tropical sun she so loved.
She will be greatly missed by her husband, Moises Abraham Castillo; son Amed (Nilsa) Abraham; daughters Yalila (Concepcion) Rodriguez, and Sassha (Michael) Rongholt. Her jewels were her grandchildren: Yashia (Peter) Gorzelany, Krystal (Theodore) Brewer, Ambar Rodriguez, Ariel and Avery Abraham, Megan, Michaela, Jacob, and Joshua Rongholt, and her great-grandchildren: Brooklynn Cooper, Olivia Gorzelany and Jamison Brewer. She is also survived by her sister, two brothers and several much-loved nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
The family asks that those who wish to send flowers may have them delivered to Oehler Funeral Home, 2099 Miner Street Des Plaines, Illinois 60016. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made in Zoraida's name to American Cancer Society; www.cancer.org
