

She was an honor student at Pontiac High School. She was a counselor at a Summer Camp where she received her reluctant nickname of "Jake" and then attended the University of Michigan, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1951. Joan was an active Sorority Sister in Zeta Tau Alpha, Newman Club Member, City Club Member, M Club Member where she served on the board of directors. Actively involved and avid supporter of all University of Michigan Athletics and Culture. Voracious reader of all genre's of books and belonged to several book clubs.
Her working career began as a journalist, where she met her first husband, Jack Colehower Bush. She also worked for the Huron Valley Advisor Newspaper. She was an investigsative journalist and was one of the first women to work in the press box at Michigan Stadium. She enjoyed photography and developed a passion for it. She refined her education at Eastern Michigan University where she received a double Masters in Children's Literature and Linguistics. She proceeded to become a teacher at the University of Michigan Dearborn until she retired.
After she retired she enjoyed traveling to different National Parks, going to Erick's cottage on Lake Michigan in Good Hart, Michigan, and cruises with Erick. She also loved to enhance her grandchildrens' cultural education by exposing them to museums, theaters, musicals, symphonys and good grammar.
Loving wife of Erick Starnal for 9 years. Beloved mother of Molly Karman, Christopher Bush, Timothy Bush (Marcia), Jerome Bush (Gozde), Michael Bush (Sally Esckilsen-Bush). Cherished grandmother of Nathaniel Bush, Silas Bush, Daniel Esckilsen, Asya Lora Bush, Regen Burt and Christian Bush. Devoted great grandmother of Calvin Burt, Coliegh Burt and Bobbie Elizabeth Burt. Sister of Peter Karner, II.
Joan was preceded in death by her first husband, Jack Colehower Bush; and her sisters, Suzanne Rehm and Claudia Tryszczyla.
Joan's family will have a visitation from 5:00-8:00 p.m. with Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 20, 2022 at Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 3410 Broad St., Dexter. A Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 21, 2022 at St. Joseph's Village Church, 7870 4th St., Dexter, MI 48130. Visitation at church begins at 10:00 a.m. Interment will occur at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield on Friday.
Joan will be sorely missed for her compassion, kindness, influence, etiquette, gentle nature, humor and general positive attributes.
