John Paul Benedict, age 88, passed away Tuesday March 19, 2019 at his Dexter home. Mr. Benedict was born July 17, 1930 in Detroit to the late John and Ann (Machoirletti) Benedict. John served his country in the United States Marine Corp at Paris Island. He was married to Margaret Bussinger from July 3, 1954 until her passing December 30, 2010. John and Margaret settled in Redford Township for 23 years and became the parents of five children. John enjoyed a long career at Michigan Bell working as both a cable splicer and a manager.
John was involved for many years in Boy Scouting serving as both Scout Master and Cub Master for Troop 387 at Vandenberg Elementary in Redford Township. He also devoted many hours to coaching basketball, baseball and softball for the Redford Township Junior Athletic Association. He ultimately became the basketball director and was pivotal in the development of a “Teen League” for high school boys ages 13-18.
In 1979 John and Margaret relocated to Dexter, Michigan where they were able to realize their dream of living a more rural lifestyle. Over their fifty-six years of marriage John and Margaret also enjoyed travel. They took many road trips often visiting National Parks in the United States and Canada. One of his favorite pastimes was sitting on the deck watching the grass grow.
John will be sadly missed by his family: children: Paul (Jean) Benedict, Susan (Richard) Terbrack, Timothy (Sally) Benedict, Joseph (Deborah) Benedict, and Kathryn Benedict; grandchildren: Sally (Joe), Kelly (Glenn), Nicole (Dan), Lyndsay (Dirk), Julie (James), Timothy (Margaret), Tracie, David, Kamille (Chris), Emily, Kyle, and Lauren; great grandchildren: Morgan, Makenzie, Jack, Josephine, Michael, Stella, Caleb, William, Michael, Jacob, Lorelei, and John. John is also survived by a sister: Janet (Jim) Hayes.
