Mary Catherine Huebner, 75, passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 1, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, sister, businesswoman and dear friend to those who knew her well.
Mary was born March 8, 1951, in Algonac, to Bernard and Carol Nugent. She was a graduate of Algonac High School and Eastern Michigan University. Following graduation, she moved to Detroit and lived with her sister, Rande, who introduced her to her future husband, Ted.
Mary was an astute businesswoman. She began her career at Central Transport, where she rose to become director of human resources. After more than 20 years at Central, she decided to start her own personnel agency, Hire Resources Inc. When Rande became ill, Mary sold her company and devoted her time to caring for her sister. Following Rande’s passing, Mary co-founded and became president of the Grosse Pointe Chamber of Commerce, growing the chamber and serving the Grosse Pointe communities for many years.
In her spare time, Mary also was very active in volunteer activities. At Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, she served as a Deaconess and chaired the Caring Committee for several years. She was also active with the Belle Isle Conservancy, the Grosse Pointe Rotary Club, Life Remodeled, Gilda’s Club Detroit, Fostering Futures, Child’s Hope, and the Libri Club of Grosse Pointe, where she served as secretary and president. She also served as First Lady of the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club when Ted was Commodore.
Mary and Ted travelled extensively in retirement. They enjoyed cruising, crossing both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and traveling as far west as Perth, Australia, and as far east as St. Petersburg, Russia. In the summers they cruised the Great Lakes and Georgian Bay aboard their beloved sailboat, Scholar Ship.
Mary is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Ted; son, Ted Jr.; daughter, Betsy; grandson, Jaxon; and sister, Ann Caiger.
Mary was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and a loyal friend. She will be remembered by all who knew her for her generous spirit, positive outlook, creative mind and boundless energy. Her family and friends are left with many wonderful memories and the love and affection she shared with all will be forever treasured.
A celebration of life is planned for mid-October.
