Raised in a lively family of five boys and one girl, Steve went on to graduate from the University of Michigan, School of Engineering. He married the love of his life, Nancy, on the day he graduated from college. Nine months later they left to serve as Peace Corps volunteers in Ethiopia. Upon returning from Ethiopia, Steve worked for Ford Motor Co. before joining the faculty of Schoolcraft College, where he discovered his love of teaching, first Automotive Mechanics and later Physics.
Nancy and Steve were married for over 54 years. They had two beautiful children, Conrad and Michelle, who grew into fabulous adults. They both married wonderful people—Rick Towler and Sandy Maciarz— and four beautiful grandchildren soon followed: Tyler and Sydney Schewe, and Charlotte and Gabriel Towler.
Steve was an optimist extraordinaire, who loved everything in his life: his car, his house, the beauty of an early snow, or the pie that Nancy had just baked. He took pictures constantly and posted simple, positive messages each day on Facebook. The world was a beautiful place to Steve and he lived joyfully each day.
In his later years, he enjoyed zipping around town on his TerraTryke, entertaining friends on his pontoon boat on Portage Lake, and playing pool with his buddies at the Cedars of Dexter.
We have lost a true force of nature. His warmth, his love, his sense of humor and even his corny jokes will be missed.
A memorial service celebrating Steve’s life will be held on Saturday, April 9th at 11:30am at the First Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Ann Arbor, 4001 Ann Arbor-Saline Rd, Ann Arbor 48103. Masks will be required in the hallways and sanctuary of the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Schoolcraft College Foundation, directed to the Steve Schewe Physics Scholarship, or to a charity of your choice.
