Charlie was born in Digby, NS, on July 28, 1933 and passed away on December 25, 2022 at the age of 89 in the care of Tideview Terrace. He was the second son of the late Mary (Weir) and Ralph Theriault and was born and lived all his life in the house that his father built in the south end of Digby.
Charlie attended St. Patrick’s School and Digby Regional High and was an altar boy at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. In his teen years he joined the Sea Cadets at HMCS Cornwallis and travelled west by train to Vancouver with them. At home, he played hockey with the Digby Ravens.
He had early employment as a labourer at the Tupper Warne Mill and with Dave Landers before he landed a job driving truck for Atlantic Wholesalers in Digby, eventually moving up to warehouse manager, working there for 33 years until they closed. Charlie then worked for Natural Resources spending summer hours outside in the woods and nature which he enjoyed, retiring after 12 years.
He was a volunteer fire fighter with Digby Fire Department for 23 years and enjoyed tending the Crown & Anchor booth at their annual fair. He was a former member of the Admiral Digby Historical Society as well as the Royal Western Nova Scotia Yacht Club where he owned and operated his own speed boat that he enjoyed very much using it to go fishing or gather dulse to dry. He was an easy going fellow, well liked, and ready to help others; a true gentleman, very polite, who liked to laugh, and was always ready with a smile.
One of his greatest loves which is unmatched by few was his love of the outdoors whether in the woods or by the water, lake, river or ocean. This included his meticulous grass cutting, weed trimming, felling trees, splitting and stacking firewood. Other favourite pastimes were mackerel fishing, boating, canoeing, backwoods camping in summer or winter on his snowmobile or later his ATV with his buddies, caring for his vegetable garden of cucumbers and tomatoes, picking blueberries, trapping and hunting animals, digging clams, and eating lobsters, scallops, quahogs. Charlie loved his travelling experiences whether visiting the Maritimes, across Canada, some USA states, Jamaica or Western Europe.
Charlie is survived by his stepdaughter Coleen Cameron (Terry), sister Sharon (Robert) Dupuis, sister-in-law Carol Theriault, nieces and nephews – John Theriault (Kate), Peter Theriault (Courtney), Margaret Theriault (Glen), Jason Theriault, Bridget Theriault, Michael Davey (Nora), Robert Davey, Karl Davey (Angela), Carol Jefferson (Steve), Jacqueline Belliveau, and Christine Langis.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Robert, sister Lillian Davey, brothers-in-law Raymond Langis and Bruce Davey, niece Carolyn Leblanc, and close companion Evelyn Cameron.
Visitation will be on Thursday, January 5, 2023 from 12pm to 1pm at Jayne’s Funeral Home followed by a funeral service at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Digby, NS, at 2pm, Father John MacPherson officiating with interment and reception to follow. Flowers welcome. Donations, if desired, may be made to Digby Fire Department or a charity of your choice.
