We are humbled to announce the death of our mother, Nanny, great nanny, and mother-in-law. Daphne passed away early in the morning, on June 23, 2025. She lived to be an amazing 97 years of age, enjoying life to its fullest. Daphne passed away at the Annapolis Nursing Home, where she had lived since 2020.
Daphne was the daughter of Stephen and Ina Mullen (Sabean), and was born on "the Green Road", in New Tusket, Nova Scotia. In her early years, she lived on the family farm, of her parents. She briefly taught school in North Range but met her future husband at the home where she was staying while she taught school. Daphne and Frederic were married and move to "the Valley" settling down in Port Williams.
Daphne worked at Don Chase Ltd, in Kentville for many years. Specializing in fine ladies' wear, Daphne was in her element. During this time, she looked after her children, the house and always had meals ready for the "girls" to put on when they got home from school.
Daphne was extremely fussy with her housework. The carpets had to vacuumed just a certain way, so they looked perfect. She loved playing cards, and took much joy in double skunking her grandson, two weeks ago in cribbage. She often said she always won BINGO at the home, and said she had to stop going some days so someone else could win.
Fred and Daphne move to Gilbert's Cove, NS, around 1979 to be closer to their two daughters. Amazingly around 1986 Daphne and her sister Jennie went to Italy, Holland and Germany to see where Jennie had been stationed as a nurse during the war. And they made it back in one piece!
Daphne was an amazing person, and she will be missed so much.
Daphne was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Frederic, son James Blenkhorn, brothers Clyde Mullen, adopted brother Robert Mullen, sisters Garnetta Marr and Jennie Dickinson. Daphne was the last surviving member of her direct family. Left to mourn her and keep her memories are: son, Wayne Blenkhorn (Ruth), daughter Sharron Hankinson (Owen), daughter Diane Hankinson (Ed), 13 grandchildren, and 18 Great Grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Dr. Buckles, Karen Doucette, and all the amazing staff at the Annapolis Royal Nursing Home for their fine care and compassion.
A celebration of life will be held for Daphne on Friday, June 27th, 2025, visitation will be held from 1pm to 2pm, with the service starting at 2pm, followed by a reception, all from Jayne's Funeral Home, Digby. Private family burial will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in New Tusket. Family flowers only. Donations can be made if you wish, to the Annapolis Royal Nursing Home, attn: Karen Doucette.
