OBITUARY

Harry Wilfred Banks

March 13, 1929August 24, 2019

Harry W. Banks "Pete" of Smiths Cove/Bear River passed away at the age of 90 on August 24, 2019 at Digby General Hospital with family and the loving nursing staff comforting him in his final struggle. Pete had many friends as was obvious during his lengthy stays in both Kentville and Digby hospitals. Pete loved to sing and so a trio was formed consisting of Bonnie , Linda and himself with Cairine accompanying on the piano. Not only was the trio formed but a very long loving friendship ensued as well. The trio's last get together was on Christmas Eve (2018) at the Digby Baptist Church with Pete belting it out as though he knew it would be his last concert. What a powerful voice he had. Pete started his working life in the woods with his father Oakley at the age of twelve and was later employed at the stave mill in Bear River and then he moved on to a career at C.F.B. Cornwallis as a Firefighter where he was employed for 32 years. Uncle Pete was predeceased by his parents Oakley Banks and Alma (Wentzel), wife Irene (Gates), brothers in law Thomas Gates, Lewis Gates and Phillip Gates, sister in law Annie Gates (Chisholm). He is survived by nephews Lynn (Catherine) , Richard ,Larry, Sean (Rene), Robert (Terri) and Murray (Jacqueline) Gates along with nieces Cathy Gordon (David) and Janine Sullivan(Gates) and Sister in Law Phyllis Gates. The family wishes to send a special thank you to the individuals who visited our Uncle Pete on a regular basis and to the doctors ,nursing staff , cleaners, and food delivery staff who all showed compassion as he touched their hearts as well. He was loved by all. There will be no visitation. The funeral service will be held at the Digby Baptist Church at 2 pm on Wednesday August 28, 2019. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations may be made to either the Digby or Bear River Baptist Churches. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Jayne’s Funeral Home, Digby 902-245-2525. Share a memory or leave a condolence at www.jaynesfuneralhome.com

I first met Harry ´Pete in the hospital where I work. He and I got off to a great start right from the first time we met. I played cards with him, brought him meals, listened to him talk about his life. What a great guy he was! I will truly miss you Pete, you changed my life for the better and I truly appreciate it. He called me ´buddy’ and I truly considered him to be my friend. It is a true shame that he is gone from this world, however, he is no longer suffering. Until we meet again Pete, Rest In Peace my friend, I will miss you!
My condolences to the family and other friends of Pete.

Pete was a special person. I was married to his first cousin once removed, Eugene. Pete shared printed music with me that many people were able to enjoy. I was able to have several visits with him in hospital. My condolences to his family.

Our sincere sympathy in Pete's passing. We have memories of Pete visiting my dad, Bud and the story telling of growing up in Bear River and working at the "Mill".
