

At a young age Hazel was the sawyer in her father’s lumber mill. She had teamed horses in the woods and worked on the family farm. As a young woman she moved to Ontario to work and raised 5 children by herself. She moved the family back to Weymouth and worked as a seamstress at a furniture plant. Hazel and her family moved to Halifax where she worked and learned how to do upholstery. In the mid 60’s Hazel moved back to Weymouth to look after her aging parents and start a small farm.
Hazel ran her own upholstery shop and taught upholstery up to 5 nights a week for the school board.
In the early 1970’s, Hazel met the love of her life, Anselm, and married him at the age of 90 years.
Hazel served as President of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Weymouth Legion for 52 years. She volunteered many, many hours in other community organizations as well. She also made and knotted over 50 quilts in the past 2 years for the Grace United Church in Digby.
Hazel is survived by her loving husband, Anslem; sister, Dorothy Mullen; daughters, Shirley Bright (late Lloyd), Carol (Greg) Boudreau, Eleanor (Irwin) Gaudett; son, Kenneth (Sylvia) Ford and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; sister, Merle Cosman and son Donnie Ford.
Hazel will be sadly missed by her family, friends and community.
Donations in memory of Hazel can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at 10am, followed by the funeral service at 11am both from the Weymouth Church of Christ, Pastor Darrell Haines presiding. Burial in United Church Cemetery at a later date. Following Public Health regulation Proof of full vaccination or letter of exception for anyone 12 or older is required to attend the visitation and service, masks are required.
