December 1, 1938 - March 18, 2019
Jean Marshall, age 80 of Bear River, passed away peacefully at the Digby General Hospital after a very brave battle with cancer. She is now pain free.
Born in Scotch Village, Hants County, she was the daughter of the late Keith and Gertrude (Smith) Harvey. She lived a farm life and after graduating from High School she attended Saint Pat’s Business College. After landing a job as a teller at the old Bear River Bank she soon met Frank, the love of her life. Together they had three girls and she devoted herself as a homemaker. Jean loved her family and enjoyed cooking Turkey Dinners for special occasions. She and Frank spent many vacations on camping trips when their girls were young and later they travelled to special places and spent time at their camp at Lake Joli. She especially enjoyed calling the loons.
She was the Secretary at Oakdene School for several years and enjoyed volunteering as the Playground Supervisor. She was very involved in the Bear River Community. When her girls were young she was a Girl Guide Leader. She had worked with the Bear River Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary since 1980 as a Treasurer, the Digby County Exhibition for 20 years as Secretary/Treasurer and the United Baptist Church for 19 years as Treasurer. She truly enjoyed her time with these groups and made many friends.
She was also a devoted babysitter to her grandchildren, all of whom she was very proud.
Jean is survived by her loving husband of 59 years Frank Marshall, and her daughters Cyndi (Alan) Gennette, Barb Gabriel, and Donna (Mark) Hersey.
She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren Ricky, Alex (Brittany), Cody, Kaily (Mike), Jenna, Chris (Maria), Megan and Addie.
She had much joy when visited by her great grandchildren Tyson, Maeve and Shea.
Jean was one of nine siblings all of whom were very close and is survived by sisters Gladys, Eva and Joyce. She was predeceased by brothers Doull, Ron and Leonard and sisters Leona and Phyllis.
She is also survived by brother-in-law Andy, sisters-in-law Shirley and Eileen and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the VON nurses who came to the house everyday to care for Jean. Also thanks to the paramedics at EHS who gave exceptional care, along with the Doctors and Nurses and Digby General Hospital.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 22 at Jayne’s Funeral Home from 7-9pm. A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 23 at 1:00pm at the United Baptist Church in Bear River, Rev Mark Cress and Rev Earl Waterman officiating. Burial to follow for family members only, and a reception for all at the Bear River Fire Department.
