Joey Outhouse, age 77, of Digby, NS, passed away unexpectedly in the Yarmouth Regional Hospital on Monday, September 23 with his brothers, Lou and Lee, by his side. Joey was born in Central Grove, Long Island, Digby County and was the second son of the late John Perceval and Carrie ‘Irene’ (Marshall) Outhouse.
A resident of Tiverton, Long Island for approximately 32 years before moving to Digby, Joey was known as a hard worder and one of the Island’s strong men—something to be proud of when baiting trawl and hoisting gear enabled you to make a living from a young age.
While confined to a wheelchair since the age of 28 due to a diving accident, Joey never allowed the tragedy to steal his zest for life. He found comfort and strength in knowing he had a Heavenly Father who cared for him and gave him the strength he needed for each day. Joey was grateful he was able to live independently with the assistance of many wonderful home care workers and nurses until the day of his passing. He loved watching the Blue Jays baseball games with Lou and Lee—an event that always included food. He enjoyed those baseball games even more when the Jays were winning.
Joey was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Fraser. He is survived by his sister Verona (Stanley) of Jacksonville, NB, brothers Lou (Joan) of Riverdale and Lee (Joann) of Cambridge, sister-in-law, Dawn, and best friend of 50+ years, Terry Titus of Centreville who made sure Joey was well fed—especially on special occasions—with the things he loved because if you knew Joey, the question was always, “What did you have good d’eat?”
Also surviving Joey are numerous nieces and nephews:
Nancy, James and Linda (Children of Verona and the late Junior Munroe); Vickie and Tina (daughters of Fraser and Dawn Outhouse); Nathan, Jeremy (AKA Tide & Timbre), Sarah and Rachel (children of Lou and Joan) and Sophrona (daughter of Lee).
Thank you to Cousin Heather for the visiting and treats—especially the chowder and egg tarts.
Joey’s favourite hymn was, “It Is Well With My Soul”, and it was a hymn he listened to as he left this world and entered eternity. He knew all was well with his soul.
There will be no visitation. There will be a graveside service on Sunday, October 13, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Tiverton, NS.
Donations in memory of Joey can be made to the Canadian Paraplegic Association: https://www.thespine.ca/
