Millie was born in Tiverton, Nova Scotia August 24, 1932 to the late Irvin and Lillie (McCormack) Pyne.
Millie graduated from the Provincial Normal College in 1950 and began teaching at age 18. She taught 2 years in Centreville, NS and 2 years in Pembroke, NS.
She met her husband, Austin, when he called to ask her to a dance in 1950. She was the new teacher in the community. He said, “When she showed up in that green dress, it was over. We never dated anyone else.” They married in 1954 and recently celebrated their 70th anniversary.
Millie married into the military life which saw several moves over the years including two postings to Europe, all while raising three children. She spent countless hours, sometimes in the early mornings at the rink while her daughters skated. She was president of the Slemon Park Figure Skating Club for several years.
She enjoyed reading, knitting, and crafting. She was also a formidable Scrabble player. If we beat her in a game of Scrabble, we would note it on the calendar, it was so rare.
Since returning to Tiverton in 1986, upon her husband’s retirement, she was active in the Tiverton United Baptist Church, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, and leading Vacation Bible School. She also enjoy Thursday mornings at the Tiverton Seniors.
Her contributions to her community are too numerous to mention. She loved her community and willingly served where she could.
