Val's first love was her family, her husband of nearly 47 years, her daughter, daughter in law and her two grandsons. She enjoyed bird watching, participating in many provincial bird counts over the years with her sister Becky, going on Frenchy trips with her sister Bev, beach combing , rock hounding, travelling to Cuba and Dominican with her brother Mark and sister in-law Niki and most recent she enjoyed travelling to Louisiana with Charlie to research his Acadian roots. Val began her career as a summer hire in 1978 at the mess hall at the former CFB Cornwallis, her position then changed to full time, and then became a supervisor and worked year round, until its closure in 1994. She then proceeded to lead many teams in various public service sectors, which included managing the lounge at the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre, managing at Mountain Gap Resort, then volunteering at the Milford Community Centre. Val spent the majority of her 40+years working in the food service or tourist industry. Over the last decade, she helped recover, and manage Milford House Properties with her husband Charlie and her friend Ruth.
The staff and guests new or returning are who and what gave Val purpose. Her fight till her last breath was to see Milford House prosper and it was her mission to introduce the world of magic that can be discovered on the paths, in the forest and in the memories created on the decks of the cabins surrounding the lakes of Milford House. With the trust and direction of those she respected and admired, Val's mission will continue and she leaves behind a wonderful legacy, her love of Milford House.
Val's family would like to thank everyone who helped her and her family along this journey, the staff at the Yarmouth General Hospital, the Canadian Cancer Society, Sobeys Pharmacy Digby, her palliative team and the VON.
In lieu of flowers the family is asking that a donation may be made in Val's memory to VON, Canadian Cancer Society, or World Vision.
